A note on Doppler processing of coherent radar backscatter from the water surface: With application to ocean surface wave measurements

چکیده
[1] The technique for extracting wave period and wave direction from radar backscattering intensity is well developed, but the determination of spectral density or wave height is hindered by the complex nature of the modulation transfer function. In contrast to backscattering intensity, the Doppler signal of a coherent radar is originated from the radial velocity of the scattering objects. Its oscillatory component is contributed by ocean waves. The peak component of the Doppler velocity spectrum can be used to obtain the spectral peak wave period and the significant wave height can be calculated from the variance of the Doppler velocity. Analyses of coherent radar measurements collected from the ocean show that with radar range coverage on the order of 10 dominant wavelengths, a good estimate of peak wave period and significant wave height is achievable with radar data as short as a few seconds.

A radar scatterometer operates by transmitting a pulse of microwave energy toward the ocean’s surface and measuring the normalized (per-unit-surface) radar backscatter coefficient (r8). The primary application of scatterometry is the measurement of near-surface ocean winds. By combining r8 measurements from different azimuth angles, the 10 m vector wind can be determined through a Geophysical M...

Three long-range (5 MHz) Coastal Ocean Dynamics Application Radar (CODAR) SeaSonde HF radars overlooking an array of as many as eight moored acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) have operated on the West Florida Shelf since September 2003 for the purpose of observing the coastal ocean currents. HF radar performance on this low-energy (currents and waves) continental shelf is evaluated wit...

[1] The anomaly of radar sea spikes, defined here as the non-Bragg scattering events with backscattering cross-section of horizontal polarization exceeding that of the vertical polarization, has been associated with steep wave features possibly going through wavebreaking process, with or without whitecap manifestation. This property is exploited for using a dual polarized radar as a remote sens...

A highly developed Bragg resonance phenomenon was observed in measurements of vertically polarized L-band radar backscatter recorded from the surface of a small inland fresh-water reservoir in central Massachusetts. These measurements were obtained with Lincoln Laboratory's LCE (L-band Clutter Experiment) radar sited on Wachusett Mt. from which the reservoir surface was visible at 4-km range an...
متن کاملFrequency shift of the Bragg and Non-Bragg backscattering from periodic water wave
Doppler effect is used to measure the relative speed of a moving target with respect to the radar, and is also used to interpret the frequency shift of the backscattering from the ocean wave according to the water-wave phase velocity. The widely known relationship between the Doppler shift and the water-wave phase velocity was deduced from the scattering measurements data collected from actual ...
